Seriously - ONLINE PEOPLE SEARCHING - is the new job hunting and candidate sourcing. When someone views your online profile, what do they learn about you? Does your profile cause them to take action and call you or write a message? Are you putting yourself out there and making yourself look good? Does all the content that represents you online simply SCREAM: "You NEED to hire me?"
If not - then you are missing out on the golden opportunity to represent yourself hundreds of times over.
Of cours…

This is a guest post from Dan Schawbel. He is 25 years old and already, the New York Times has called him a "personal branding guru." Dan's book is Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success, and it just came out today.
Personal branding describes a process where individuals differentiate themselves from a crowd by articulating their unique value proposition whether professional or personal, and then leverage it across platforms with a consistent message to acheive a spe…

You've been hearing about how valuable networking is for your career. We always hear it, and when its top of mind, it is something we all agree we need to do a better job of. However, I am willing to gamble that 90% of us don't always follow through. My hypothesis is that we don't because we tend to think that networking means having to "know" a lot of people...and let's face it, thats kind of scary.
But, thats not necessarily true.
Seriously. The PROMISE is that by having a strong network of…

This past weekend, I had the privilege to talk with some up and coming members of the agricultural community. One thing we talked about was the image that we put out there, tends to be an invitation for what we get back. Let me clarify...
As an example, if you spend more time at church - you tend to spend more time with church friends and do church activities. If you put lots of facebook applications on your profile - you get bombarded with lots MORE facebook apps. When you're fishing, you tend…

There is a video you need to watch - by an author named Keith Ferrazzi, who wrote Never Eat Alone. Are you familiar with it? Have you read it? If you have, or are, leave me a comment.
Here is the link to the video:

How committed are you to the relationships that you maintain? More specifically, what are you doing to help make those people successful? You know,…

Hi everyone, I read this from Chris Brogan's blog on and just had to share. It pertains to all of us.
Here are some things that are true: people don’t read. And when they pretend to read, they skim. Comprehension and context are at an all time low. We’re snackers, and it’s adding up. Where this hits us the worst is when communications professionals attempt to match their idea of me (and by me, I mean you) with their “target.”
It’s deeper than not reading. Part of it is not caring, because we c…

I'll be visiting the great state of Kansas this weekend as I head south with my good friend Seth Heinert to facilitate the Changing Seasons conference with Kansas State University Seniors. This will be an exciting first trip to Manhattan for me! I am hoping that some of our AgJobNetwork members - that are also KState students will be in attendance. It would certainly be nice to meet you face to face, instead of profile to profile. If you're going to be there, send a message to my profile here on…

How many t-shirts does it take to rile up 12,000 plus FFA members? When they are free...and you're throwing them, apparently one is all you need! But when you have a half dozen (and so do 10 of your friends) you can really get the arena rocking. I was a part of a team that chucked about 5 dozen t-shirts into the stands at Conseco Field House at the first session last night! We also identified a student from Minnesota to win a WLC Scholarship for his chapter.
The first couple days have been fill…

The atmosphere around Indianapolis is electric! Looking out my hotel room window I am dwarfed by the tallest building in town - but looking atop I see not only the tradition U.S. Flag flowing, but directly below it an enormous FFA Flag showing off its national blue and corn gold colors! The streets are full, the restaurants are busy, hands are being shaken, and connections are being made. Its exciting!
A traditional part of the convention consists of students trying to fill out their guidebooks…

Day one at the convention for me actually began at 4am in Lincoln, Nebraska. I rolled out of bed (reluctantly), packed up my MacBook and my pad of paper for notes, showered, slugged back half al liter of java, and waited for the Omalink shuttle to take me to the Omaha airport. It was a slow start, and I'll admit - I wasn't that excited to leave normal routine behind for four days!
After a spirited political conversation with my driver, I checked in, sent a message to our facebook AJN group, and…

Thanks again to all that have invited friends to join our network! We continue to grow. We've officially reached 2,000 members! Congrats!
So where do we go from here? What is an appropriate number of people? Why does the facebook group keep growing, even though I don't sponsor anymore membership contests on there? (Not that I am complaining!) Biggest question of all - How do you think we should aim to increase our membership in the AgJobNetwork? Remember, our network is our networth. I'd like t…

I was having a look at our job listings early this morning. After having just posted our first ethanol plant position, the picture became crystal clear - there is great diversity in occupation within the agriculture industry. Sure, I knew this. But actually being able to look at all the job postings as I insert them in the job blog has been a reality check.
Thanks for all you do to help connect others, and for bringing more value to this network.

Comments from my friend Shane at National FFA Organization -
"I really wish that this had been around when I needed to do an internship. I had the hardest time finding something that interested me. This sure would have helped. I've sent a lot of classmates to the facebook group (and now the actual site). I passed the new web address along to the career development folks at Cobleskill as well."
Shane's comments have done nothing but inspire me to do more. Our network continues to grow. We easil…

I am happy with where the AgJobNetwork has started out, and where it continues to grow. Remember, this started as just a facebook experiment that turned into something more. Now we have our own page - in addition to our remaining network on facebook. In total, our network encompasses more than 1,800 people and is ever expanding. Just over the past four days, we added 50 more on our fb group, 60 to our mailing lists, and 50 on our social page here. With every person that joins our network, it bec…

We should all be troubled (but not panicked) by the financial situation we are now in here in the United States....and beyond. If you're looking for some info on how safe your money is, please read the article below from CNN.com
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Bank failures are scary - especially during these times of economic distress.
Washington Mutual, once the nation's largest thrift and rocked by bad lending on real estate, had been reportedly teetering on failure. On Thursday regulators seize…

Someone was questioning if you could have something other than a pig for your profile picture. The answer is yes. The reason I chose the pig as a default pic was to motivate you to show your smiling face to us all! You're welcome to upload a picture that you choose - as long as its appropriate! :)
Thanks for being a part of this great network!

Welcome, and thank you for being a part of the AgJobNetwork. This community truly is powered by the word of mouth engine, and your being here makes us that much louder! When this group originally started taking off on facebook, I couldn't believe the rapid growth! After a little bit of research, I found out why. You demand something more.
Job searching is now interactive. We can talk with others in our network about opportunities. You can create groups about interests that you have. Make your p…
