University of Vermont Seeks Field Coordinator for new Farmer Apprentice Program

Continuing Education at The University of Vermont is seeking to fill a Field Coordinator position for its new Farmer Apprentice Program. The program will be offered April 4– November 1, 2011 with educational sessions facilitated primarily at the Intervale Center located in Burlington, Vermont (www.intervale.org).

The Field Coordinator will be responsible for student services, operations, and administrative coordination for the Farmer Apprentice Program as well as management of the 2 acre student farm. This includes working directly with the Program Director, program developers, host farmers, and other stakeholders regarding the course planning process, student recruitment and advising, administrative services, and logistical coordination needs. Other responsibilities include: coordinating all farm visits and field trips; providing student services and serving as the main point of contact for students; serving as the “on the ground” teaching assistant and a consistent presence throughout the duration of the program for students; maintaining Facebook/Twitter/Blog; assisting with student recruitment; serving as a member of the Program Steering Team., This is a part-time seasonal position, requiring 20 hours per week February 1-March 1 and full time 40 hours/week between March 1-November 15, 2011.

The successful candidate will have 5-7 years farming experience including: planning, field preparation, planting, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, tilling, rotational crop planting, irrigation techniques, sustainable, organic and/or diversified farming; Bachelors degree in related field, experience working with farmers and providing support/services to students, and effective interpersonal, communication and project planning/coordination skills. Working knowledge of MS Office, email, internet, and social networking tools required.
